A special exhibition by 30 artists and groups hailing from 14 countries opened April 12 at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in the central city of Taichung, inviting audiences to use their senses.

According to the Ministry of Culture, “Of Anarchy in Music: More Journeys in Sound” is jointly organized by the NTMFA and Paris-based National Museum of Modern Art - Centre Pompidou, and features works from local artists and some from the latter’s New Media collection. The opening ceremony was attended by Cultural Minister Li Yuan, French Office in Taipei Director Franck Paris and the exhibition’s curator Marcella Lista, among other guests from home and abroad.

Li said that despite geographical distance and no apparent historical connection, Taiwan and France seem to have a strong affinity for each other’s culture. He cited as examples French filmmaker and movie critique Olivier Assayas’ introduction of Taiwan new-wave movies of the 1980s to French audiences as well as the translations of many Taiwan comic books and literature.

He thanked the organizers for staging the avant-garde exhibition and offering visitors a unique way to appreciate and experience sound as an art object through audiovisual and lighting installations.

In response, Paris commended the NMTFA as a key platform to showcase Taiwan’s culture and the work of artists from home and abroad. He said Taiwan and France both value cultural inclusion and diversity, adding that the exhibition is a bold experiment that transcends borders and promotes creative freedom, and that he looks forward to more collaborative projects.

According to the NTMFA, participating artists include American-Swiss artist Christian Marclay, Dubai-based Laurence Abu Hamdan and Yuko Mohri from Japan, as well as Lin Chi-wei, Jao Chia-en and Wang Fu-jui from Taiwan. The exhibition will run through July 6, the museum added. (SFC-E)
